The Mystery of 1967: Who Was Melanie?

3 min read

In the world of magic, we often focus on the "how"—the sleights, the gaffs, and the mechanics. But at CS Magic, we’ve always believed that the most powerful moments happen when the audience forgets they are watching a trick and starts believing they are witnessing a story.

That is the heart of our latest release: Melanie.

A Year of Psychic Revolution

The year was 1967. While the world was focused on the "Summer of Love," a much quieter revolution was happening in small, dimly lit research rooms across Europe. Paranormal researchers were obsessed with the idea of "extra-sensory perception" (ESP) in children. They believed that young minds, untainted by the skepticism of adulthood, could tap into a frequency of the universe that we’ve all but forgotten.

Among the case files of that era, one name stands out: Melanie.

The Girl and the Symbols

Melanie was a two-year-old girl who possessed what researchers called "Guided Intuition." She didn't predict the future in the way a fortune teller might; instead, she seemed to influence the present.

The most famous experiment involved five simple cards, each bearing a distinct geometric symbol. Researchers would pre-determine an outcome, and Melanie—using nothing but her late mother's small gold locket as a "pendulum of focus"—would consistently identify the target. She claimed the locket "got heavier" when it was over the right choice.

Bringing the Legend to Your Table

When we decided to create the Melanie effect, we knew we couldn't just use standard playing cards. To do her story justice, the props had to feel like they were pulled directly from those 1967 archives.

We spent months in our UK studio perfecting the look of the "experiment cards." They are made of metal, so will last a lifetime and will withstand the odd spillage. While the Melanie routine just uses 5 cards, we added an extra set to the package so that you can use them for your favourite ESP matching routines. We also marked them for you, just in case you needed that function too. Also included is the locket. We selected a vintage-style gold coloured piece for the performance, giving you a physical "artifact" to hand to your spectator.

Why Storytelling Mentalism Works

Why does Melanie get such a massive reaction compared to a standard "pick a card" trick? It’s because of emotional investment.

When you perform Melanie, you aren't just showing a mystery; you are sharing a piece of history. You are inviting your spectator to step into the shoes of those 1960s researchers. When they place the locket on a symbol—completely of their own free will—and find that it matches the prediction, they aren't just thinking "How did he do that?" They are thinking, "Maybe Melanie was real."

Handmade with Care

As a family-run magic shop, we take pride in the fact that Melanie isn't mass-produced. Every set is hand-made and checked by us before it leaves our doors. We believe that if a magician puts their trust in a CS Magic prop, that prop should feel like a piece of art.

Whether you are performing in a close-up setting, at a spooky Halloween event, or just for friends at a dinner party, Melanie offers a hauntingly beautiful moment of wonder that your audience will never forget.
